Extra air in the tires does not necessarily help when you carry extra weight in your vehicle. It really depends on your vehicle, its weight load capacity, and your tires. Generally, you should always follow your vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations when inflating your tires, as over-inflating them can cause problems. Nonetheless, some are of the school of thought that a few extra pounds of air can help offset the extra weight you add to your vehicle. We here at MMW Repair don’t necessarily agree.
The average PSI recommended for passenger vehicles is anywhere from 27 to 32. If you drive a super-sized SUV or truck, your recommended PSI may be 32 to 37 or higher. Again, it depends on what the manufacturer recommends, and it’s also important to note that your rear tire pressure may be different from your front tire pressure. Carrying extra cargo shouldn’t affect the PSI recommendation that much unless you plan to carry excessive weight. If so, it’s best to consult with an automotive expert rather than to simply over-inflate the tires.
Why Can’t I Just Add a Little Extra Air?
There are many reasons why you should never over-inflate your tires and safety is the primary one. If you put too much air into your tires they could fail. We aren’t talking about them bursting; blowouts generally happen with under-inflated tires. Over-inflated tires wear down easier because they don’t grab the road the way they should. This causes them to lose their handling and you to possibly lose control of your vehicle. Because of the increased air pressure inside the tire, your vehicle loses its ability to handle bumps and turns effectively.
Aside from a very uncomfortable ride, over-inflated tires also wreak havoc on your fuel efficiency. The manufacturer has tested different tire pressures with your make and model of vehicle, and it has determined the optimal one to keep you driving instead of fueling up at the gas station. When you over-inflate your tires, you reduce your vehicle’s fuel efficiency just as under-inflated tires reduce it. This is why auto experts recommended you check your tire pressure every other time you fill your vehicle at the gas station.
This is also why we recommend you check with tire experts before you over-inflate the tires. The few extra pounds might be recommended, but they also might not be.
